While H. Gilbert Welch, a professor at the Dartmouth Institute of Health Policy and Clinical Practice, cites over-diagnosis as the main reason not to get your PSA annually because it leads to unnecessary treatment and side effects. Jamie Bearse, a member of Zero, a prostate cancer advocacy group, counters that argument by stating that the problem is not over-diagnosis, but over-treatment. Many men who come to me with early diagnosis have limited knowledge, and are looking for first steps. With prostate cancer, you must be your own advocate and take the initiative when gathering information and choosing treatment options. There is no silver bullet or one treatment fits all, each case is different. The PSA test can be a valuable tool when used correctly and in conjunction other tests and can assist in choosing the best treatment option for you.
